Colour Sergeant Joseph Devlin McConnell Sergeant McConnell was born Joseph Devlin O'Brien in Dublin on December 11, 1852. His mother, Sister Bernadette Marie Devlin O'Brien, died in childbirth. His father was unknown. Sister O'Brien worked in the local "hospitality" industry and little is known of her past except that she was said to be a very popular and hard working young lady. Joseph spent 3 years in an orphanage before being adopted by Patrick O'Flaugherty McConnell and Imelda Murphy McConnell on Tuesday, March 4, 1855. The McConnells were potato farmers in Tipperary. Joseph worked on the farm until 1867 when he enlisted in the British Army and served in India. Colour Sergeant Joseph Devlin McConnell, 5 th Company, the 27 th Regiment of Infantry (the Queen's Royal Irish Foot and Mouth), was awarded the Victoria Cross after being killed in action on 29 September 1878. His 1879 citation read: Dublin 29 September 1878. Colour Sergeant McConnell's estate was awarded survivor benefits of the sum of £2 three shillings and sixpence. This money was never collected by Patrick and Imelda McConnell because they died in a fire while Joseph was up the Khyber. The £2 three shillings and sixpence was invested by the court appointed Trustee and has now grown to the sum of £2,958,042.42.
